Gait analysis is the systematic study of animal locomotion, more specifically the study of human motion, using the eye and the brain of observers, augmented by instrumentation for measuring body movements, body mechanics, and the activity of the muscles. Gait analysis is used to assess and treat individuals with conditions affecting their ability to walk. It is also commonly used in sports biomechanics to help athletes run more efficiently and to identify posture-related or movement-related problems in people with injuries [Ref.: Wikipedia page on Gait Analysis.]
In this project a survey of capabilities more specifically available equipment and nearby gait labs will be assessed as a first step. An in-shoe pressure sensing apparatus has been developed as one of the last semester’s projects. In the department there is already some interest in biomechanics. Collaboration with a graduate student on muscoluskeletal mechanics (particularly AnyBody modeling software) could be provided. Aim is to gather reaction force and kinematics data from gait analysis and perform inverse dynamics calculations on the software.
